Douglas High School

In the Fall of 1953 the new high school building for District was to be completed> However, the construction was not completed in time for the school year. So we started our new school, grades 7 through 10 at Lookingglass Grade School with every possible space made into a classroom. The students of the district, grades 11 and 12, continued going into Roseburg high School, where they graduated ( the classes of 1954 and 1955).

We just got settled into our routine of being squeezed into buses and classes at Lookingglass when it was time to move to the still unfinished high school building.

When we moved this time there was not enough classrooms completed for all the grades. So the 7th grade was bused to the Dillard Grade School for classes in the Dillard Play Shed. As classrooms were completed we were slowly moved into the new building (the upper hallway was piles of dirt). In march of 1954 we were finally settled into our new building.

In the process of starting our new school, we needed a name, colors, team name etc. So we held elections and contests.

The school name: Douglas  was chosen with an essay won By Margaret Sherman. (class or 1957)

The school colors: Crimson and grey (not black Mick) chosen from a ballot list.

The team name: Trojans was chosen from a list of choices on a ballot.

Since we started with grades 7 through 10, we had no graduating class for two years.

I was one of the second graders and had math on the stage of Lookingglass Gym. Dave Nye was our teacher.

I don't remember when we started to compete in athletics, but I believe it would be the 1955-1956 school year. When we had our first graduating class in 1956. I do remember the football field was dirt and when it rained it was mud. The other schools did not like to play at Douglas. By halftime you could not read the uniform numbers because of the mud from the field.

I graduated in the class of 1959, which was the first class that attended Douglas High School from the 7th grade (1953) through the 12th (1959).
